Book 2 Index


A concise list of names and terms used throughout The Heir of Ænæria. It is spoiler-free for the second book but DOES contain spoilers for The King's Gambit. Please go to the "Book 1 Index" page at the top for content free of spoilers from the first book.

Aelfred—A member of the noble Crane family of Vestinia. He is the son of Lisurgius. 

Ænæria—A theocratic kingdom founded by King Xander almost 16 years prior to the events of The Heir of Ænæria. It is made up of 14 provinces that were once independent kingdoms making up the Northern Realm. 

Alejandra—A codename for the leader of the Miners Guild. Her real name is known only to her family. She is the mother of Mandi, daughter of Risa, widow to Heath, and niece of Takashi Kabedge.

Alphonse Limmetrad—Benedict Limmetrad’s father and Lydia Limmetrad’s brother. He is the former Chief of Freztad and founder of the Miners Guild. He died after being removed from the stasis chamber in the Grand Vault.

Apollin—Province of Ænæria across the sea from Bacchuso. It is governed by Legate Phoebus. It’s former King was Dante Zula. Its current head of nobility is Dante’s son, Lord Rufio Zula. 

Archayin—The name for the common tongue of the people in Ænæria and the Penteric Alliance.
Argos—The general of a Sygil in Sydgilbyn military formations. They are always stationed atop a horse in battle.

Argr—The term is known by some to be a term of emasculation. It was Longinus’s code name when she fought in Ignistad’s gladiatorial arena.

Arion—The legate of Diania. 

Arma—A wastelander who has been imprisoned in Vänalleato after she and her crew attempted to enslave Siegfried and a young couple in The King’s Gambit.

Arynn—Daughter of Siegfried, the cartographer of Vänalleato. She is 17 years old and the new legate of Vestinia. She is easily recognized by her bright red hair and blue eyes.

Ascendants—The spirits of the dead living within the Great Dream according to the beliefs of Vänalleatian natives. Called Ancestors by Ænærians.  

Bacchuso—The newest province of Ænæria. It is located on a large island that lies across the sea from the Apollin Province. Its capital is White Tree. Longinus is its current legate. The Dion clan is the noble family. Their previous ruler was King Comus.

Bayek—A member of the Miners Guild. 

Benedict Limmetrad—The son of Alphonse and Jean Limmetrad. He is a Nephilim and has superhuman abilities. He is 16 years old and easily recognized by his missing right eye and eyepatch.

Beyfon Lao—The former King of Mercura. His son is Lord Florence Lao.

Bjorn—A member of the Miners Guild who had lived in Svaldway.

Blood Bugs—Vernacular for mosquitos. They are often blamed for the plague that occurred on the Gjoll River 10 years ago.

Bruno—A former Rhion who joined the soldiers of the Penteric Alliance.

Cameron—The sister of Nico. She was a navy captain of Neptuan and disguised herself as a man during the Rhion draft to protect Nico from the war. She faked her death and married a fisherman and has three children. Her current whereabouts are unknown.

Carina, Harun, and Pawel—A young family who escaped Plutonua to avoid the census. Carina and Harun are the mother and father of Pawel. 

Cerez—The agricultural province of Ænæria, west of Plutonua. It is governed by Legate Philemon. It possesses the greatest farmland in Ænæria and is its largest supplier of food. One of its primary produce is the poppy flower, which is used for its analgesic properties.

Constantine Flavius—The only son of Juptura’s late King Gaius Flavius. He is the second most influential man in Ænæria, behind only the King. 

Darius—At the age of 15 he deserted the Rhion of Holy Ænærian Army in hopes of becoming a member of the Miners Guild. He uses one of the sun-swords of the late Legate Fenwin, which he has named Legate’s Bane.

Dark Helm—The capital city of Plutonua.

Diania—Ænærian island province in Xander’s Bay. 

Dion Clan—The noble family of Bacchuso. Its Lord is Edwin Dion.

Draka—An Orkish Scout leader. She has a dark skull tattoo over her face, a septum ring and two metal horns pierced through her lower lip.

Edwin Dion—The lord of the noble Dion Clan of Bacchuso. He has dark hair and broad shoulders. His wife is Lady Monika; they have four children.

Elders—Priests of Vänalleato who preach the words and beliefs of the Grand Elder.

Emilia – Longinus’s mother. It is also the name of someone important to Sam in the prologue.

Enochians—The mysterious creators of the Vaults. They are beings from another world that want to take Earth as their new home. They are extremely powerful. 

Estel Crane—As the daughter of the late King Hartwin, Estel is the Lady of Vestinian nobility. She is the widow of Legate Fenwin. She is a tall woman with golden eyes, light brown skin, and rich dark hair. 

Eternal Mother—The worshipped deity of Ænæria. Synonymous with the Eternal Sun. 

Eyoni—The Orkish term for hostile outsiders. 

Felix—A young boy from Vänalleato with a rare combination of black skin, blond hair, and blue eyes. He is the adoptive son of the blacksmith Wulkan.

Fenwin—The previous legate of Vestinia. He died after a battle with Ben and Darius.

Ferals—Humans afflicted by Tatanka’s Curse. They are born with lions’ teeth and antisocial tendencies. They eventually turn into ghoulish creatures without any remaining trace of humanity. They are attracted to the scent and sight of blood and have long talons as sharp as their teeth. They are exiled to Tatanka’s Cursed Grove. Fangs retrieved from killed ferals are used to grant outsiders access to Ney.

First Hearth—the capital city of Vestinia. There is a small village outside the city were many of its slaves live.

Florence Lao—The Lord of Mercura’s noble family. His brother was the last King of Mercura. 

Frederick—Legate of Minervia. 

Freztad—Farm and trade village next to the Gjoll River. At the center of the Penteric Alliance, Freztad serves as its capital.

Gaius Flavius—The late King of Juptora. 

Gal and Skalle—Brothers from a group of people known as Orks from the eastern land known as Ney. They are hairless and have skull tattoos over their faces.

Garad—An Orkish Scout leader

Gatron—Legate of the Plutonua province. He somehow faked his death and escaped from Vänalleato.

Geoff—A Sentinal of Freztad.

Gjoll River—River that flows along Sydilbyn, Freztad, and Vänalleato. According to Vänalleatian belief, it is a holy river with a strong connection to the Great Dream. The cremated remains of their deceased are released into the river. 

Glendir—The legate of Mercura. He is King Randolph’s second-in-command.

Gordon—The First Knight of Talamdor. He is Thane Morgiana’s second-in-command. He is a short and wide man with pale skin, auburn beard, and balding head. 

Grand Elder—Leader of Vänalleato. He is believed to be the reincarnation of the founder of Vänalleato and their belief in the Great Dream.

Great Dream—The afterlife according to the belief of the Vänalleatians. All souls enter the Great Dream where they are free and can aid in the affairs of the living. 

Gus—A Marzoran man living in Kokopolis, Ney. He is twenty-four years old and a very skilled healer. He has a full head of dirty blond hair and blue eyes.

Hartwin—The final King of Vestinia. He was Lady Estel Crane’s father.

Heath—He is the wife of Alejandra and father of Mandi. He died during the Battle of Jordysc.

Huginn and Müninn—Robotic ravens designed and build by Mimir and Alphonse. They are able to communicate over long distances and record things they see and replay it on screens built into their foreheads.

Hunter Flies—Vernacular for dragonflies. They are raised for the purpose of keeping the blood bug population under control. 

Ignistad—Capital city of Ænæria at the center of the Marzora Province. Many Ænærian nobles vacation here.

Isaac—Captain of the Vänalleatian Vänaguard.

Jambi—A farming village in southern Ney. 

Jarl Geon—The current leader of the settlement of Sydgilbyn as well as the commander of their army.

Jean—Alphonse’s wife and Benedict’s mother. She is an Enochian and mysteriously disappeared after Ben’s birth.

Jordysc—A former Miners Guild base hidden in old mines north of Neptuan. It was destroyed after Randolph and Fenwin assaulted it during The King’s Gambit.

Joshua—Son of Jarl Geon of Sydgilbyn. He has tan and olive skin bald save for a long dark ponytail. He is twenty-one years old. 

Juarez—The new legate of Juptura. His distinctive feature is that half his nose is missing.

Juba—a man from Marzora who helped safely bring Gus to Ney.

Kamir—The admiral of Mashariq’s navy. 

King Remus and Queen Paccia—The former King and Queen of Marzora. They died with the rest of the Severus Clan when Xander had them slaughtered. 

Kirk—A wastelander from Larz’s tribe. He is missing half of his ear and has a piercing over his right brow.

Kokopolis—the capital city of Ney. It is located by immense waterfalls and the remains of a city from the Old Days.

Kolpos—The name of a land far across the Shimmering Sea. 

Kristos and Zechariah—Twin Sentinels of Freztad. They were best friends with Rakshi and quite close with Ben. They are both 26 years old. Zechariah is one of the most skilled Sentinels and departed with Rose during the events of The King’s Gambit. Kristos is the new Sentinel Commander.

Larz—The leader of a wastelander tribe. He is missing his fourth and fifth fingers on his left hand. He face is weather-beaten, red and scarred. A long, nasty-looking gash stretched from his right brow to the bottom of his unshaven lip. He is blind in his right eye. He wears a small bronze ring with blue gems on the top of his right ear. Liv is his step-daughter.

Legate Chariot—a special type of sun-carriage that is about twice as large and has six wheels.

Legate Rivers—The former legate of Juptura. He was supposed to be king after Julius but died of a supposed lung infection.

Legate’s Bane—The name of the sung-sword that Darius took from Fenwin.

Lisurgius—A member of the noble Crane family of Vestinia. He is the eldest uncle of Lady Estel Crane. His brother was the former Vestinian king, Hartwin.

Liv—A wastelander woman of about twenty-years and a member of Larz’s tribe. She has multiple piercings in her lips and short, dark hair.

Longinus—The former prefect of Minervia. She is 19 years old and was raised by Randolph after her father died and dishonored their family. She is now the legate of Bacchuso. Longinus is actually the name of her father but Randolph makes her use that as her name as she disguises herself as a male. 

Longyer—The town nearest the entrance of the Grand Vault on Svaldway.

Lydia Limmetrad—Official Chief of Freztad, though she has not acted as such in the last 3 years before the events of The King’s Gambit due to her melancholia and losing the use of her legs. She was exposed to the plague 10 years before the events of The King’s Gambit and slowly experienced an ascending paralysis. She is the mother of Rose Limmetrad and sister to Alphonse.   

Mandi—An intelligence agent of the Miners Guild. She is 18 years old and has a large burn on the left side of her face. Health and Alejandra are her parents, and Risa is her grandmother. She is very skilled with various types of knives.

Marcus and Jesse—Husband and wife, respectively, living in Svaldway. They are among the founders of the Miners Guild.

Marzora—Formerly the most powerful of the Northern Kingdoms before Julius had their royal Severus family slaughtered. It is now the capital province of Ænæria. There is no legate in Marzora as King Randolph oversees it directly.

Mashariq—Western settlement of the Penteric Alliance. Its leader is given the title of ‘Sheik’ or ‘Sheika.’ It is currently led by Sheika Thalia. They are most renowned for their fishing and skill as boat builders. 

Mathias the Exile—He was of the first generation to be born and raised after the end of the Old Days. He united a tribe of people to find Freztad and is the first Limmetrad.  
Memnon—the Vestinian prefect.

Mercura—An Ænæria province on the west coast. It is governed by Legate Glendir.

Mimir—The first guardian of the Grand Vault. His sole purpose is to preserve its integrity. He is an artificial intelligence entity embedded directly in the computers of the Grand Vault but in the prologues is seen in a human body that is bald with green eyes. 

Mind melding—The process of experiencing another person’s memory.  

Miners Guild—An underground organization scattered throughout Ænæria dedicated to overthrowing King Xander’s regime. 

Minervia—Ænærian province east of Marzora. It was previously overseen by Randolph before he became king. It is now overseen by Legate Frederick. The capital is Owl’s Look.

Monika—Lady of the Dion clan and wife of Lord Edwin Dion.

Motion Block—Term used for electronic screens used to show videos. See 'Terminals' for more.

Neith and Yeong—Two Sentinels (female and male, respectively) who, along with Zechariah, accompanied Rose to Ænæria. They have been held prisoner there ever since.

Neptuan—Fishing and naval province north of Marzora. It is governed by Legate Thatch.

Ney—Land far east of the Penteric Alliance. Its natives call themselves Orks. 

Nico—A former farmer in Cerez who became a naval captain in the Holy Ænærian Army. He is now an airship captain in Bacchuso.

Nobility—The living members of the former royal families of the Northern Kingdoms. They are rich and influential members of the provinces they live in. 

Northern Realm—Ænæria and the other lands surrounding it. It was once known as the Northern Kingdoms before Julius’s rule.

Old Days—Denotes the time before the cataclysmic events that led to the fall of Earth’s civilizations. Nearly all technology and traditions have died since then, along with the vast majority of humanity.

Opelia—An elderly woman of the noble Crane family.

Orkish—The language of the Orks.

Orks—Inhabitants of Ney. Adults wear tattoos related to their professions. They have had very little interaction with outsiders.

Parvidom—Crossroads town between Plutonua and Vestinia. It is the largest trading hub in Ænæria and crucial to their economic stability. 

Penteric Alliance—The pact between five settlements south of the Northern Realm. It is also used to refer to the land between the settlements’ borders. 

Persefino Clan—the noble family of Plutonua.

Philemon—The legate of Cerez.

Phoebus—The legate of Apollin.

Plague—A great sickness that overcame many settlements near large bodies of water about 10 years ago. Many believe blood bugs to be the culprit of the plague because anyone who was bitten in that time period came down with a long and debilitating sickness. Every child bitten in Freztad died, except for Benedict.

Plutonua—Ænærian province bordering Vänalleato’s territory. It is overseen by Legate Gatron. Both Darius and Trinity are originally from here.

Prefect—A high ranking military officer in an Ænærian province, second only to the legate. They have the authority to give orders to their subordinate Rhion.

Pyat—An Ork ambassador in Kokopolis. He works directly for the Sachems.

Rakshi—Former commander of the Freztadian Sentinels. She was 23 years old and a prodigy swordswoman and archer. She died when Randolph sent wastelanders to attack Freztad.

Randolph—The former legate of Minervia and now the King of Ænæria. He raised Longinus from a young age and forced her to hide her identity. 

Rhea—Randolph’s stepdaughter who died twelve years ago during the massacre at Sun Reach, Minervia.

Rhion—Title of an Ænærian soldier.

Risa—One of the founding members of the Miners Guild. She is the sister of Takashi Kabedge, mother to Alejandra, and grandmother to Mandi.

Rohan and Zoya—Father and mother to Rakshi. They are both originally from Vänalleato but moved to Freztad shortly after Rakshi was born.

Roryk—A Rhion who worked for the Miners Guild and brought Gatron to Vänalleato as a prisoner. 

Rose Limmetrad—Daughter of Lydia Limmetrad and Julius. She is sixteen years old for the majority of The Heir of Ænæria. She was the acting Chief of Freztad for nearly three years. She is an exceptionally skilled archer. Her bright green eyes are her defining feature. 

Rufio Zula—The Lord of the Zula clan of Diania. His father was King Dante Zula.

Sachems—The three leaders of Ney. They live in a palace in the center of Kokopolis. 

Sam—A woman who listens to Mimir’s tale in the prologue of The King’s Gambit and The Heir of Ænæria

Sentinel—The title of a Freztadian guard. They are responsible for keeping the village safe as well as patrolling the roads within its borders. 

Sera—Arynn’s best friend who disappeared two years ago. It is believed that she was one of the first to be kidnapped by slavers near Vänalleato. Her disappearance led to the Elders’ decision to not allow women to leave the town alone.

Severus clan—The former royal family of Marzora. They were all slaughtered under Julius’s command when he seated himself in Ignistad. 

Shadow—A mysterious man in the Miners Guild. He has the odd combination of dark skin with blond hair and blue eyes.

Sheika Thalia—The leader of Mashariq, the eastern settlement of the Penteric Alliance.

Shimmering Sea—the ocean east of Ænæria.

Shining Sister—The name of Captain Cameron’s ship.

Siegfried—Master cartographer of Vänalleato. He was one of the original founders of the Miners Guild. He is Arynn’s father. His defining features are his bald head and red beard.

Sierra—A large robotic wolf who follows Ben on his journey. She was created by Alphonse and Mimir and named by Arynn.

Sleipnir—A large grey draft horse that used to belong to Rose and help Ben during his journey through Ænæria. He has not been seen since the Battle of Jordysc.

Sol Invictus—The motto of Ænæria. It means ‘Invincible Sun.’ It is used to inspire strength among Ænærians.

Sols—Round, metal coins used as currency in Ænæria. There are copper, silver, and gold coins.

Sun Reach—A village in Minervia. Randolph, Longinus, and their family are from this village. Alejandra, Mandi, and their family are from here as well. The village was destroyed twelve years ago.

Sun-Carriage—Solar-powered trucks used by high ranking Ænærians or for special missions. 

Sung—Solar-powered guns used by high ranking Ænærians or for special missions. 

Sydgilbyn—A desert settlement south of Freztad. They are known for their military expertise and large population.

Sygil—A military unit in Sydgilbyn. It is made up of eighty warriors and one mounted general known as an Argos.

Sylvio—A member of the Vänaguard.

Takashi Kabedge—One of the oldest residents of Freztad. He is a mentor and parent figure to Ben and adoptive father to Julius. He is Vic’s husband and Risa’s brother. He owns the Freztad farm as well as a food shop. 

Tamzin—Randolph’s deceased wife. Her brother is Longinus’s father. She had her daughter, Rhea, died during the massacre at Sun Reach. 

Tatanka—The land spirit of Ney. The Orks believe his true form is a buffalo. 

Tatanka’s Cursed Grove—A hybrid of an Old Days’ city and forest just outside of Kokopolis, Ney where ferals roam. It is where the trial takes place for outsiders wishing to enter Ney.  

Terminal—A general term used to describe sets of computers, monitors (see Motion Blocks) keyboards, and other associated tools and technology. All terminals are Vault-technology in origin.

Thane Morgiana—Leader of Talamdor, the western settlement of the Penteric Alliance.

Thatch—Legate of Neptuan. He was once a pirate who raided the settlements along Xander’s Bay.

The Eastern Wastes—The uncivilized lands between Mashariq and Ney.

The Mouth of Ney—The Orkish name for the massive waterfalls in Ney just outside of Kokopolis.

Thunder Staves—Polearms that emit powerful arcs of electricity found in the Kolpos Vault.

Tree of Mathias—A large linden tree (often called a lime tree, as well) at the center of Freztad. Only the western facing half of the Tree still has leaves and flowers. On rare occasions, it will grow seeds as well. The eastern facing half is dead and has never bloomed since its discovery. The Limmetrad name is derived from the tree.

Trinity—A former slave from Plutonua who learned the art of healing. She is approximately 17 years old, and her master freed her two years earlier than required when he was dying. Between that time and the events of The King’s Gambit, she moved to Ignistad and had a relationship with Darius. She is now a very close friend to Rose.

Valhaven—The oldest building in Freztad and the ancestral home of the Limmetrad family. It is used to hold meetings for the villagers and leaders of the Penteric Alliance. 

Vanäguard—The soldiers of Vänalleato.

Vänalleato—A settlement atop a very small mountain overlooking the mouth of the Gjoll River. Its leader is the Grand Elder and its people have a deeply spiritual culture. The town is most well-known for its farming of blood bugs.

Vaults—Secure and mysterious buildings left over from the Old Days. It is believed that the only way to enter the Vaults is through blood of Enochians. They hold Enochian Technology. There are currently five known Vaults: The Grand Vault in Svaldway, the Broken Vault far east that Alphonse found, the Minervian Vault that was somehow opened by the Ænærians, and the Vault across the Shimmering Sea in a land called Kolpos.

Venaz—A northwestern province in Ænæria.

Vengeance—The name of Kristos’s war hammer.

Vestinia—Ænæria province east of Plutonua and south of Marzora. It was previously governed by Legate Fenwin and now by Legate Arynn. Its capital is First Hearth.

Vic—Takashi Kabedge’s husband. He helped raise both Benedict and Julius when they were young. Before becoming gravely ill, he was a teacher in Freztad and a farmer alongside Takashi Kabedge.

Voidsweeper—A legendary blade that has been lost and found over again for generations. It has immense power somewhat similar to that of a sung.

Vulcestus—A northeastern Ænærian province, most renowned for its engineering.

Wastelander—Bandits who live outside of organized civilization. They wander the land without laws and often pillage small towns or outposts for food and supplies. They are often marked by piercings, scars, paint, or tattoos. 

White Tree—The capital of Bacchuso.

Wilheard—A member of the noble Crane family of Vestinia. 

Wilhelm—A Freztadian Sentinel. 

Wulkan—Blacksmith of Vänalleato and adoptive father of Felix. He is easily recognized by his blond hair, red beard, and very large build.

Yalliknok—An island off the coast of Bacchuso.

Zevi—Meat butcher of Freztad and betrothed to Rakshi.

On Writing The King’s Gambit (Part 2)

There are other factors that led to the post-apocalyptic setting, but I’d be spoiling it for you if I mentioned them. Though it’s not explicitly stated in the story, much of the environment in the story is in its current state due to the effects of environmental degradation. It’s hot out, plants don’t grow as well, mosquitos are everywhere, people need to cover their skin from the sun, there are lots of storms, and the color green is used—a lot. I knew from the very beginning that I wanted to make my world post-apocalyptic. To me, that’s nearly synonymous with climate change.
